The “Series of 6 Mermaids” by Emily St. Marie is an exploration in color and fantasy using traditional illustration techniques. This series explores a common subject of a solitary mermaid underwater, but with six unique color palettes and poses. Each scene is hand painted on cold press paper in semi-transparent washes, using layers of ink, ink wash, and watercolors. Step 1: pencil & inkStep 2: ink and watercolor washStep 3: finish layersuntil it's done! Each mermaid piece in the Series of 6 Mermaids has a limited color palette of only two or three colors, searching for a balance that is nearly monochromatic. The color combinations are:
1. "Breaking the Surface" (blue + blue)7.5 x 5” Ink, Ink wash, watercolors, & gouache on cold press paper About this piece: An exploration in blue on blue, this one delivers beautiful shades to admire; ultramarine, Prussian, cerulean, to name a few. This mermaid swam up to the surface, perhaps to check out the sky. "Breaking the Surface" captures that moment between water and air, above and below. The overcast sky doesn't give away much, but the blue undersea depths look enticing. Mermaid mood, blue. 💙 2. “Ruby” (red + coral)7.5 x 5” Ink, Ink wash, watercolors, & gouache on cold press paper About this piece: Here she is in all her red glory, exploring the reds in my color palette... coral, merlot, fire engine, etc. A ruby red and coral colored mermaid swimming upwards. Dramatic contrast between the inky black deep sea and the layers of red on top, almost like a hint of lava. 3. "Amethyst Reverie " (purple + yellow)7.5 x 5” Ink, Ink wash, watercolors, & gouache on cold press paper About this piece: Amethyst has found a beautiful spot for a mermaid daydream, and perhaps she's drifting off for a nap. The light filters down from above giving everything a hazy glow. Sand laps in soft layers against the rock, some wavy underwater flora floats around, capturing the lazy mood. Colors in this piece vary from violet and lilac to yellow and magenta. Been dreaming of a purple mermaid? Here she is in all her lavender glory. 4. "Viridian Wave Mermaid" (green + yellow)7.5 x 5” Ink, Ink wash, watercolors, & gouache on cold press paper About this piece: An exploration in green, light blue, and yellow. This mermaid going places in the sea green water, which hints at darker greens at the bottom, lighter ones at top. A viridian wave to carry her along. She has naturally dark green hair swept up in a hair and with some sea flowers, and a shimmering green tail. She seems very carefree in the deep sea atmosphere. 💚🧶🍋 5. “Hot Pink Sunset” (pink + yellow)7.5 x 5” Ink, Ink wash, watercolors, & gouache on cold press paper About this piece: This mermaid has it all; great hair, great color, an awesome necklace. She stops mid swim to ponder her next move. Maybe she’ll swim to the sand bar after all. Exploring hot pink, warm pinks, yellow, gold. Examining the light filtering down from above, suggesting it is the perfect time of evening for a leisurely swim to explore the lagoon. As mermaids do. 6. "Aquamarine Mermaid Dream" (BLUE + GREEN)7.5 x 5” Ink, Ink wash, watercolors, & gouache on cold press paper About this piece: An exploration in blues and greens, this mermaid is enjoying a nice corner of the lagoon. Friendly fish come to say hello. Light filters in from above, it’s that perfect time of day when the sunbeams make little God rays and add a luminous glow to the water. The mermaid’s hair reflects the colors around her, turquoise and aquamarine. Some originals still available for purchase!Art collectors: how to buyEach piece is $99 + shipping.
