Lately I had a fan approach me from my social media and ask if I could fill a special request based off of a piece of art they had seen on my profile. This is the story of how I created them a custom piece based off of my original work (not AI). "Room of Dolls"This illustration started off inspired by Room of Dolls, an Emily St. Marie Original.
I did "Room of Dolls" in ink, ink wash, watercolors and gouache. This illustration is based off of a childhood experience I had, going into a room full of dolls that held a mysterious aura. Maybe with less twin dolls and more books? Like the girl whose room that is (was?) is more into reading than dolls. Perhaps the room of a slightly older child, and a fraction less eerie. But basically the same general theme, the girl opening a door and discovering that room. I could definitely do that. This illustration is all about entering a room you've never seen before, full of mysteries. So delighted to be working on this one! I love this theme. There ARE a lot of twins in the original piece of art. The room belonged to a twin, and the theme was repeated throughout. I was happy to work in more books. I love books!
First step, drawing in pencil. Note the absence of the twin dolls. And an additional bookcase added to the left. On the wall above is the cute addition of a cat painting. Step 2: Ink LinesSecond step, inking the first lines. I did this with a dip pen and manga ink. Step 3: Ink Wash Ink wash is added with a brush and diluted ink. Step 4: WatercolorsOnce ink wash is done, color can be added. I use watercolor and brushes and layer the color on until it is done. Customer response was great:
And that is how more original art is made from a source illustration. Thanks for reading!
